Following a year that required immense support efforts around the world and raised many conversations about inclusivity, Pantones Colour of the Year 2021 has followed suit, bringing us not just one but two colours for the upcoming year. The dynamic duo are Illuminating (PANTONE 13-0647) and Ultimate Gray (PANTONE 17-5104)!

As a combination the colours symbolise our connection with family, friends and our communities that have formed and strengthened throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. “The selection of two independent colours — PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Grey and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating — to be our Pantone Colour of the Year for 2021 conveys the idea that is not about one colour or one person, it’s about more than one,” explains Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Colour Institute. “They communicate a deeper understanding of the importance of relationships and our need for one another. The joining of these two different colours speaks to the strength and optimism that results from unifying different ingredients.”

Illuminating is a cheerful shade of yellow that glistens with a liveliness and hope. The colour captures a warmth like that of a summer’s day, which encourages feelings of optimism and creativity. Ultimate Grey however, is a colour that builds a strong sense of security and calm. It is dependable and has an assuring quality that encourages us to feel steady and composed.
When combined, Illuminating and Ultimate Grey, make a bold statement together due to the distinct contrast.
